Overview
ScreenRewards ("we", "our", or "us") is a family screen-time and chore management service. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, how long we keep it, and the choices available to families who use the app and website.
ScreenRewards is built on two privacy principles that are not negotiable: family content is end-to-end encrypted so our servers cannot read it, and we never collect personally identifying information about children.
End-to-End Encryption
The sensitive content your family creates in ScreenRewards — including children's display names, chore names, chore descriptions, notes, and task history — is encrypted on your device before it is transmitted or stored on our servers. Encryption and decryption happen exclusively on devices that belong to your family. Our servers store only ciphertext and cannot read any of this content.
Your family's encryption key is derived from a PIN you set and is never sent to our servers. This means:
- We cannot read your children's names, chore names, notes, or task history.
- If our servers were ever compromised, the attacker would find only encrypted data that is meaningless without your PIN-derived key.
- We cannot recover encrypted data if you lose your PIN. Protecting your PIN is your responsibility.
The following are not encrypted end-to-end and are readable by our systems where operationally necessary: parent account identifiers (used for authentication), screen-time balances and enforcement state (used to sync device locks), push notification tokens, and device identifiers.
Information We Collect
We collect only what is needed to operate ScreenRewards:
- Parent account information: Name, email address, and account identifiers provided through Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google.
- Child profile identifiers: An opaque profile identifier and family membership record are stored on our servers to route data to the right family. The child's display name is stored only in encrypted form — we cannot read it.
- Chore data (encrypted): Task titles, descriptions, notes, schedules, reward minutes, photo-proof requirements, approvals, rejections, and completion history. All of this content is end-to-end encrypted on your device before storage.
- Photo proof: If a parent enables photo proof for a chore, the child may capture and upload a photo for parent review. Photos are encrypted on-device before upload.
- Screen-time and enforcement data: Screen-time balances, time earned, time spent, daily usage-limit settings, schedule-lock settings, and device restriction state. These are not encrypted end-to-end because they must be readable by the server to coordinate enforcement across devices.
- Device and push data: Installation identifiers, platform, optional device name, and push notification tokens used to keep devices in sync and send enforcement or approval notifications.
- Usage data required for the service: On supported platforms, the app may process device usage information needed to calculate spent screen time and apply the family rules configured in ScreenRewards. This processing happens on-device and is not sent to our servers.
- Waitlist email: If you sign up on our website before launch, we store your email address solely to notify you when the app is available.
We do not collect passwords. Authentication is handled by Apple or Google on your device. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs.
How We Use Your Information
- To create and manage parent accounts, child profiles, and family groups.
- To store (in encrypted form) chores created by parents and maintain task completion histories.
- To calculate screen-time balances and sync them across enrolled devices.
- To send push notifications for approvals, rejections, and device lock or unlock actions.
- To store and display optional photo proof attached to chore submissions (encrypted before upload).
- To maintain security, prevent misuse, and support account recovery or deletion requests.
- To send a one-time launch announcement to waitlist subscribers.
We do not sell personal information. We do not use your data for targeted advertising. We do not collect analytics data for cross-app or cross-site tracking. Because family content is end-to-end encrypted, we could not read or use it for secondary purposes even if we wanted to.
Children's Privacy
ScreenRewards is designed for family use under parent or guardian supervision. Child profiles are created and managed by a parent or guardian. We do not intend for children to create independent accounts.
We never collect a child's email address, phone number, date of birth, school, or any other contact or personally identifying information. A child's profile consists solely of a display name assigned by a parent — and even that display name is encrypted on-device before reaching our servers, so we cannot read it.
We do not build profiles on children. We do not market to children. We do not share any information about children with third parties for any purpose other than what is strictly necessary to operate the app (for example, delivering a push notification via the platform's notification service).
Parents control all child profile information, chores, task histories, screen-time settings, and optional photo proofs associated with their family account. Parents can delete the family account — and all associated data — from within the app at any time.
Permissions and Device Features
ScreenRewards may request access to device or platform features such as camera access for photo proof, push notifications, and operating-system screen-time or usage access features required to enforce family rules. We use those permissions only to provide the core functionality of the service.
Photo Proof
Photo proof is optional and only used when a parent enables it for a chore. Uploaded photo proof is stored so the parent can review the submission. Photo proof is deleted after the parent approves or rejects the submission. If account or family data is deleted earlier, associated photo proof is deleted as part of that deletion process where reasonably practicable.
Data Storage and Security
Your data is stored on servers used to operate ScreenRewards. We use the following layers of protection:
- End-to-end encryption for family content: As described above, sensitive family content is encrypted on-device and unreadable by our servers.
- Encryption in transit: All communication between the app and our servers uses HTTPS/TLS.
- Secure on-device storage: Encryption keys and authentication credentials are stored in platform-provided secure storage (iOS Keychain, Android Keystore) where available.
- PIN-protected key derivation: Your family's encryption key is derived from your PIN using a key derivation function. The PIN and the derived key are never transmitted to our servers.
No security measure is perfect. In the event of a server-side breach, end-to-end encrypted content (children's names, chore data, notes) remains protected. Unencrypted operational data such as screen-time balances and device identifiers could be exposed; we would notify affected users as required by law.
Data Retention
- Account and family data: Retained while the account remains active.
- Task and completion history: Stored indefinitely unless you delete the relevant account or family data.
- Photo proof: Deleted after approval or rejection, or earlier if the associated account or family data is deleted.
- Waitlist email: Deleted promptly after the launch announcement is sent, unless you ask us to remove it earlier.
Third-Party Services
We use third-party services only where needed to operate ScreenRewards:
- Sign in with Apple for authentication on Apple platforms.
- Sign in with Google for authentication on supported Google platforms.
- Firebase Cloud Messaging (FCM) to deliver push notifications and background device sync or enforcement messages.
These providers process data according to their own privacy terms when acting as separate controllers or service providers. We do not use third-party ad networks or analytics platforms.
International Use and Transfers
ScreenRewards is offered globally. Your information may be processed and stored in countries other than the country where you live, including countries where privacy laws may differ. When we transfer personal information across borders, we take reasonable steps to protect it in line with applicable law.
Your Rights
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, or receive a copy of your personal information, and to object to or restrict certain processing. You may also have the right to complain to a privacy regulator in your jurisdiction.
You can request deletion of your data by contacting us at [email protected]. Family owners can also delete the family account from within the app. We will respond to privacy requests within a reasonable time and in line with applicable law.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the updated policy on this page with a new "Last updated" date.
